People keep putting SmartRecruiters and Tenzo in the same sentence, and it’s a little bit of a mismatch. SmartRecruiters is a full applicant tracking system: requisitions, pipelines, offer management, reporting. Tenzo is an AI recruiter that plugs into an ATS like SmartRecruiters and takes over the high-volume, repetitive part of hiring — getting candidates screened, interviewed, and onto a calendar. If you’re trying to decide whether you need something on top of your ATS, here’s what actually differs.

The ATS Remembers Everything. It Doesn’t Do Anything.

SmartRecruiters is a system of record. It’s where requisitions live, where pipelines get tracked, where hiring managers leave feedback, and where offers get generated and approved.

But it doesn’t execute. Someone still has to call candidates, confirm they’re who they claim to be, run the actual screening conversation, and get everyone booked on a calendar. SmartRecruiters has started closing that gap with its “Winston” assistant, which handles AI-driven candidate shortlisting and chat-based applications. However, its only the most basic of interactions.

Tenzo isn’t trying to manage requisitions or become your system of record. It sits on top of the ATS you already have and takes the top-of-funnel work off a recruiter’s plate: reaching out to candidates, screening them, interviewing them, verifying them, and scheduling them, without anyone manually driving each step.

The Interview Question: Who’s Actually Talking to the Candidate?

Tenzo’s core product is Morgan, an AI recruiter agent that runs real voice interviews around the clock over phone, WhatsApp, video, or email, in 40+ languages. That means a candidate can get interviewed the moment they apply, at 11pm on a Saturday, in whichever channel and language suits them, with no recruiter on the line.

SmartRecruiters’ answer here is Winston Screen and Winston Chat: sending candidates job-specific questions and walking them through the application via a conversational chat interface. That’s structured Q&A and application guidance, not a live, adaptive voice or video interview run by an AI agent. It’s a solid upgrade from a static application form. It’s still a different category of product from something that can hold an actual conversation with a candidate on the phone.

SmartRecruiters has recently started piloting an AI voice screening solution white labeled from Joveo. However, feedback from early customers has been that it is robotic and non-adaptive.

Tenzo also reads resumes the way a recruiter would, for context and relevance rather than keyword matching, and pairs that with the live interview so every candidate gets a consistent, structured evaluation instead of just the ones a recruiter happened to have time for.

Fraud Checks: One Side Built a System, the Other Posted a Warning

Proxy interviewing, deepfakes, stolen identities: none of that is a hypothetical anymore, and it’s an area where the two platforms part ways. Tenzo runs dedicated fraud detection and identity verification, using 40+ signals to flag proxy interviews, deepfakes, and stolen identities during the interview itself.

SmartRecruiters has nothing comparable.

Compliance is a separate question, and Tenzo is SOC 2 Type II and GDPR certified, with a de-biasing layer that strips protected-class information from transcripts and a design that lets candidates see and challenge how they were evaluated, since they’re only assessed on information they directly provided. SmartRecruiters maintains its own security and compliance posture as an enterprise ATS serving global customers. Its specific certifications are detailed in its own published trust documentation.

Scheduling, Rediscovery, and Playing Nice With SmartRecruiters

Scheduling is the other visible gap. Tenzo handles interview scheduling and calendar coordination end-to-end between candidates and hiring teams, so nobody’s stuck in an email back-and-forth, and SmartRecruiters’ Winston Companion is headed the same direction with some scheduling handled through chat-based assistants. However, Winston requires more manual intervention from hiring teams and leads to 12% higher candidate dropoff due to scheduling friction.

Rediscovery is where the two diverge more. Tenzo mines a company’s own ATS database, including a SmartRecruiters instance, to resurface candidates who were screened before but didn’t get an offer, so they don’t just sit forgotten in a database nobody revisits. SmartRecruiters offers no native feature like it.

None of this requires ripping SmartRecruiters out. Tenzo integrates directly with SmartRecruiters, one of 57+ ATS integrations it supports, and for a team that’s already invested in SmartRecruiters as its system of record, the pitch is to keep it and add the execution layer on top rather than migrate anywhere.

Where This Lands

SmartRecruiters earns its spot as an ATS. What SmartRecruiters hasn’t built is the layer that actually talks to candidates, checks who they are, and gets them on a calendar without a human pushing every step forward. That’s the layer Tenzo is.

Two things stand out if you’re comparing these seriously. One is the interview itself: Morgan runs live voice conversations 24/7 in 40+ languages, while Winston Chat and Winston Screen guide candidates through structured questions in a chat window — useful, but not the same thing. The other is fraud and identity, where Tenzo runs a dedicated 40-plus-signal detection system and SmartRecruiters has none.

Beyond those two, the story is more about fit than about a scorecard. Tenzo plugs into SmartRecruiters rather than competing with it, mines your existing candidate database for people worth a second look, and takes scheduling off everyone’s desk. You keep the ATS your process is already built around, and recruiters stop being the ones who have to dial a candidate at 9pm because that’s when the candidate happened to be free.

Curious what that looks like with your own pipeline? Book a demo with Tenzo and see Morgan work against your SmartRecruiters data directly.
